Garage Door FAQs
Answers from the Experts at Billings Overhead Door
I think my hand-held clicker may have been lost or stolen, what do I do?
If your remote has gone missing or been stolen, your first step is to clear all programmed codes from your garage door opener to prevent unauthorized access.
Here's how:
- Locate the Learn Button on the opener unit (usually on the back of the box hanging from your garage ceiling).
- Press and hold the Learn Button for about 10 seconds. This will erase all stored remote/keypad codes.
- Reprogram the devices you still have using the learn button.
To replace your lost clicker, call us with your opener’s brand and model. We can:
- Provide a new remote at our location, or
- Send a technician to deliver and program a new one for you.
For new remotes and accessories, visit our Garage Door Openers page.
My door opens fine but won’t go down, what’s wrong?
This is typically an issue with your photo eye sensors. Here are a few quick troubleshooting steps:
- Look for obstructions in the door’s path.
- Check the photo eyes at the base of your garage tracks. They should be clean and properly aligned. Check if the LED indicator light on each eye is lit up and not blinking or flickering. If they are blinking, try adjusting the eyes until you get solid lights on both sides.
- Try holding the wall button If the door closes this way, it's most likely a sensor issue.
- Ensure the opener isn't disconnected.
Still stuck? Let our techs help! Schedule a service call and we’ll get it fixed fast.
My power went out, how can I open my garage door?
You can manually operate your garage door by doing the following:
- Pull the emergency release cord (usually red) to disconnect the opener.
- Lift the door manually.
- When power is restored, pull the cord again and operate the opener to re-engage it.
Some openers have battery backup systems to keep them functional during power outages. If you're interested in this feature, see our Garage Door Openers page.
My door only opens part way, what’s wrong?
This usually signals a problem with your garage door springs, which may be broken or out of balance. It could also be:
- Misadjusted opener travel limits
- Track obstruction
- Damaged rollers or cables
Avoid further damage, schedule a service call and let us inspect the system safely.
My opener makes noise but it isn’t moving the door, what’s the problem?
If your opener hums or makes noise but the door doesn't move, possible causes include:
- The door may be disconnected from the opener rail.
- The drive gears inside the opener may be stripped or worn out.
This typically requires internal repair or replacement. Our Garage Door Openers team can help with both.
My door got hit by a car/snowplow/ATV, etc. What should I do?
First, don’t try to move the door yourself, it could be unsafe, especially if your vehicle is stuck. Instead:
- Call us immediately if your vehicle is stuck inside or under the door.
- Take pictures of the damage.
- Text or email us the photos along with your name and address for a faster estimate and response.
We’ll inspect the damage and recommend either repair or replacement. Visit our Contact page for next steps.

Isn’t it cheaper to buy a door from a big box store? (Home Depot, Lowe’s)
Not necessarily. In fact, we often match or beat those prices and include:
- Professional, local installation
- Trusted, in-house service team
- Support after the sale
Avoid the hassle. Shop local and get better value. Compare our offerings here.
I bought an opener from a big box store, will Billings Overhead install it for me?
Yes! We’ll install it at our standard labor rate. Most installs take about 2 hours.
Important notes:
- Make sure the rail fits your door height. Most store-bought openers come with a bolt-together rail that may need an extension for doors over 7'.
- It may be more affordable (and reliable) to buy the opener from us. We use one-piece rails and match the opener to your door size.
